Visit to the “Portobello Carbono Verde” forests

27/02/2025

The Portobello Carbono Verde Initiative, developed within the Motor Verde program and driven by Fundación Repsol, Grupo Sylvestris, Crédit Agricole, and Portobello Capital, focuses on promoting sustainable and inclusive development in rural areas through large-scale reforestation in Spain as a tool for CO₂ emissions offsetting.

Last week, the team visited the forests of Alixo and Incio, located in León and Galicia, respectively, where significant restoration and tree planting efforts are underway. During the visit, progress was assessed in ecosystem recovery, the growth of new plantations, and the positive impact on local biodiversity. These efforts aim to strengthen the environment and contribute to the fight against climate change.

Carbono Verde is a pioneering project with a triple environmental, economic, and social impact. The numbers speak for themselves. In less than three years, ~5,000 hectares have been reforested, enabling the absorption of over 1.8 million tons of CO₂. Additionally, more than 1,800 jobs have been created, with a special focus on the inclusion of vulnerable groups. The fund extends across more than 50 forests, mainly in Galicia, Extremadura, Asturias, and Portugal.
